PARENTS: Did you hear about the Wake-Up Call presentation?

Wake-Up Call is a life-size exhibit of a teen's bedroom with more than 20 "red flags" that can signal drug or alcohol use. The bedroom identities spots where teens may hide drugs, household items that can be used as drug paraphernalia and ways teens try to cover up drug and alcohol use. Our goal is to educate parents and other adults who are influential in the lives of youth so they know what seemingly innocent items can actually be an indication of substance abuse.

The Wake Up Call presentation will take place:

ASK THE SHERIFF: Shooting on Private Lands

This week’s question comes from someone who asked to remain anonymous. The question is: My friend and I are looking to get into some competitive speed shooting, but the local range is limited to 5 rounds per magazine and no rapid fire. My family has private land that we could use to set up our own range. What laws do we need to be aware of when shooting on private land?

Common sense should govern the day, and always follow the four fundamental rules of firearm safety. That being said, generally as far as the law goes when you are on your own land, ensure you are 50 feet away from the centerline of any roadway (§167.31, Wis. stats.), ensure adult supervision and control (§29.304), follow all local restrictions which you can get from your municipal clerk (§66.0409), and ensure that you have taken all necessary precautions not to endanger someone else (§941.20).

There are other restrictions when you are on someone else’s property as well. Sport shooting ranges are also governed by section 895.527 of the Wisconsin statutes. We encourage everyone to take a hunters safety and other firearms safety courses before you start any recreational shooting sport pursuit.

Have fun, be courteous, and be safe.

Hope this answers your question. If you have a question you want to ASK THE SHERIFF, send us a message and we’ll take a look.
