Today at 8:10 a.m., the sheriff’s office received a call from the Maine Elementary School regarding suspicious persons at the school. Two people were challenged by school staff before leaving in their vehicle. School staff was not familiar with either person.

During the time in which law enforcement officers from the sheriff’s office and local agencies were searching for the vehicle, area schools and businesses were contacted and made aware of the situation as the intent of the suspicious behavior was unknown.

Shortly after 9:00 a.m., the vehicle was located by the sheriff’s office. Two subjects were ultimately taken into custody without incident. It is suspected that the use of illegal narcotics played a role in this incident. There are no further public safety concerns and this matter remains under investigation at this time.

The Marathon County Sheriff's Office would like to thank all veterans of the United States Armed Forces for their service to our country this Veteran's Day.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. (History.Com)

Here are some other interesting facts relating to U.S. Veterans:

16.1 million living veterans served during at least one war.
5.2 million veterans served in peacetime.
2 million veterans are women.
7 million veterans served during the Vietnam War.
5.5 million veterans served during the Persian Gulf War.
Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II, about 558,000 are still alive.
2 million veterans served during the Korean War.
6 million veterans served in peacetime.

The current size of the U.S. Armed Forces (by branch) are as follows (based on Department of Defense data sources):

Active Duty Personnel:

U.S. Army 541,291
U.S. Marine Corps 195,338
U.S. Navy 317,237

On November 9th, the 8th Marathon County Sheriff's Office Citizen's Academy came to a close. Over the past 10 weeks, our 11 participants learned what the Sheriff's Office has to offer to the citizens of Marathon County. They participated in mock traffic pursuits, mock active shooter scenarios and met many members of our special teams as well as members from every division. We hope that our academy met and exceeded your expectations! It was truly an honor and a pleasure to have met all of you! (Thank you to the Benevolent Association for the cake and to RIver Valley Bank for supplying the pizza). Congratulations, Graduates!

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office Court Security Unit (C.S.U.) reached a milestone recently. Between August 9th, 2017 and November 8th, 2017, the Deputy Sheriff’s assigned to the C.S.U. have screened 51, 856 persons coming into the Marathon County Courthouse. The average number of persons screened daily is approximately 786, and our current record for a one day security screening total is 1,008 persons.

For comparison, the C.S.U. has screened more persons than the cumulative total of the populations of the City of Wausau (38,872), Village of Rothschild (5,347), and Township of Rib Mountain (6,825) combined (based on U.S. Census data). During this time period the C.S.U. has intercepted 1,001 prohibited items at the screening point and prevented their entry into the Marathon County Courthouse. Of those 1,001 items, the majority (622) were knives or edged weapons of various types. Other prohibited items included weapons components, impact weapons, illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, and chemical agents (i.e. “pepper spray”).

In addition to the main courthouse entrance security screening point duties, the C.S.U. is responsible for internal security of the courts, court related activities, government operations within the courthouse, and judicial security. The C.S.U. actively investigates threats to the judiciary and other persons who work or visit the Marathon County Courthouse and have recently arrested individuals for making threats against judges. Additionally, the C.S.U. has arrested individuals on courthouse grounds for various types of criminal activities, arrest warrants, and a number of incidents in which intoxicated individuals (under the influence of illegal drugs or alcoholic beverages) have been intercepted at the security screening point and arrested for intoxicated operation of motor vehicles.

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office Court Security Unit appreciates the cooperation of the public in our efforts to ensure security and safety for all persons who work at or visit the Marathon County Courthouse. If you have any questions regarding security procedures at the Marathon County Courthouse, please visit the Marathon County and/or Marathon County Sheriff’s Office website for additional information.
