Corrections Officer Michael Tuley asked that we share this story with you for a couple of reasons.

First of all, as you read this story you will realize how appreciative he is of a couple of people who recently touched his life, literally.

Second it is a great story to demonstrate to you the importance of knowing and staying certified in the use of CPR. And lastly, as the holidays approach you will see why the Tuley family is so thankful this year. We hope you are counting your blessings as well as Thanksgiving approaches…

September 24th, 2017 was a normal day in the life of Corrections Officer Michael Tuley. The 43 year old was working out with some fellow law enforcement officers at the Merrill Senior High School. The group had just finished when Tuley collapsed to the ground.

Those with Tuley at first thought the normally straight laced officer was goofing around, but when they saw him lying there they realized something very serious was going on. Through a group effort CPR was started and Captain Dale Bacher of the Merrill PD applied an external defibrillator to Tuley and gave him two shocks prior to the arrival of an ambulance. Bacher was assisted by Capt. Greg Hartwig, Chief Corey Bennet, Officer Eric Soberg and Kronenwetter Officer Matt Gorell.

Tuley was shocked two more times prior to being transported to Ascension Good Samaritan Health Center. He was soon transferred to Aspirus Wausau Hospital where he was kept in a drug induced coma for a few days. A check of his heart showed no blockage and doctors blamed the entire event on a cardiac arrhythmia and outfitted him with an internal defibrillator. After the event doctors told Tuley only 10% of those who suffer arrhythmia such as that survive, putting him in a small lucky club.

As of this writing Tuley is back to work after taking off a couple of weeks. He reports in total he was shocked with an external defibrillator nine times during the event. He is obviously grateful for the quick response and life-saving actions of his fellow officers.

And we here thank them too,

Mike, we look forward to having you around for many more years serving the citizens of Lincoln County.

Today we would like to welcome our newest Corrections Officer, Holly Cummings.

Holly has started her career in Lincoln County, but she is no stranger to the correctional setting. Our most recent hire had previously served two years at the Shawano County Jail before being appointed locally in October.

Holly is a Shawano native having graduated from high school there. She attended North Central Technical College and received her basic jail certificate from Fox Valley Tech. Her five years in the nursing field also compliment her skills in stressed situations.

Sheriff Jaeger is pleased with the latest hire in the jail noting, “It is always great to see someone with experience and skills seek employment here; I am sure she will be a great asset.”

As we told you last week we have some news we want to catch you up on at the Sheriff’s Office. This is from this summer but we wanted to welcome back Deputy Lange on our page before we introduced you to some more recent hires...

One of the newest deputies to join the ranks of patrol has a familiar face as we welcome Logan Lange back to the LISO family.

After completing his police science degree at North Central Technical College Logan completed his recruit training at Nicolet Technical College in Rhinelander. Logan was hired in August of 2013 in the Corrections Division and then in January of 2015 became a member of our patrol division.

A year later, Logan took a job in the patrol division of the Merrill Police Department.

In the spring of 2017 Logan realized brown was a better fit than blue for him and began the hiring process at the Sheriff’s Office and was formally returned to our patrol division in July.

Logan is a graduate of Merrill Senior High School and is a life-long resident of Merrill; he recently completed his Bachelor’s Degree from Rasmussen College.

Welcome back to the brown team, Logan!

This story is one of several stories you will start seeing in the coming weeks as we keep you updated about things happening around the Sheriff’s Office:

Deputies are feeling a bit lighter around the waist lately thanks to a new uniform change. This past summer Sheriff Jaeger approved Lt. Andy VanderWyst as the test model for a new tactical vest which allows most duty belt equipment to be carried on the vest itself.

VanderWyst wore the vest throughout the summer months and reported back that the vests not only took considerable weight off his hips, but it also was comfortable when riding in the squad for long periods of time. Based on VanderWyst’s experience, Sheriff Jaeger then approved the adoption of the vests which were budgeted outside of the uniform allowance.

For most the only equipment that remains on their waist are their sidearm and keys. Richard Cowell Tactical Company did custom orders of the vests so each deputy enjoys a model made specifically for them as each vest was customized with the wearer being able to select what pockets went where, and if he or she wanted more or less such as extra magazine pouches. With all of the extra equipment patrol carries these days the need for the external carrier became quite clear as deputies now have a tazer, tourniquets, naloxone or narcan along with other equipment.

With the bulk order the county also saw considerable savings from the company.

The only thing patrol will have to adjust to is wearing a winter coat with the new vest, but for the most part between the vest, the body armor, and whatever under layers the user has on, the old fleece jacket may be a thing of the past except for long term outside work such as directing traffic. In the summer months they allow the user to undo the front part so the air conditioning of the squad can cool you down, and when inside the office they are a quick on and off in case someone needs to hit the road quickly for an urgent call.

Showing the next vests are: Deputy Blade Mikula, Lt. Andy VanderWyst, Deputy Sam Steckbauer and Deputy Jared Parr. Some of you may note Deputy Steckbauer’s pants are darker, he wears a more durable pair of pants on his patrol due to his K9 assignment.
