Tuesday Tip! If you are going to be traveling for the holidays remember these tips from the National Safety Council:

- Use a designated driver to ensure guests make it home safely after a holiday party; alcohol, over-the-counter or illegal drugs all cause impairment

- Make sure every person in the vehicle is properly buckled up no matter how long or short the distance being traveled

- Put that cell phone away; distracted driving causes one-quarter of all crashes

- Properly maintain the vehicle and keep an emergency kit with you

- Be prepared for heavy traffic, and possibly heavy snow

Police seeking to reunite animal cruelty victim dog with family.

Police are trying to reunite a female Terrier mix dog with her owner following her rescue today after a neighbor reported a man beating the dog with a baseball bat. The incident unfolded this morning shortly before 10:00 a.m. when a neighbor called police to report he saw a man chasing and hitting a dog with a baseball bat.

Police arrested Ryan Christopher Kastrava, age 38 of Springfield following their investigation, which revealed Kastrava chased and pursued the fleeing dog into blackberry bushes in an alley behind his home in what appears to be an anger driven attack on the animal. Kastrava alleged the small female dog attacked his chickens after allegedly digging into his chicken coup. Kastrava told police the dog had killed two of his chickens, motivating his rage, but the police investigation revealed all of the five caged chickens appeared free from injury.

An Animal Control Officer found the terrier lying in the alley suffering from a large bleeding laceration on her skull. The officer scooped the suffering dog and transported her to Springfield Emergency Veterinary Hospital where she is being treated for her injuries and monitored for any brain or other internal injuries. Police and veterinary staff described the terrier as a gentle and friendly dog despite her injuries.

Meanwhile, Kastrava is charged with Second Degree Animal Abuse in connection with the attack. These charges could change if the terrier’s condition takes a turn for the worse, but veterinary staff are optimistic for full recovery. “Being reunited with her people would help her condition,” said Officer Brian Austin – The Springfield Animal Control officer who responded to the call.

Kastrava told police he struck the dog when she turned on him and bit him, however their investigation determined the only injuries on Kastrava were those created by blackberry thorns scratches he sustained while pursuing the fleeing dog deep into blackberry bushes in the alley around the corner from his home. Police believe Kastrava struck the dog with an aluminum baseball bat after the dog came out of hiding after he chased her into deep into the blackberry bushes.

Springfield police are using funds from their citizen created CHETT Pet Fund to pay for the treatment of the terrier. These funds are intended for police to utilize under such circumstances. Donations to the CHETT Pet Fund can be made in person at the Springfield Justice Center.
