Bail and Bondsman

When a person is charged with an offense, he or she may be granted temporary release from custody provided he or she posts bail. Bail is the amount of money or form of property that will be used by the court to ensure that the accused shows up at his or her scheduled court appearances. If he or she misses just one, the money or property will be forfeited.

A bondsman is an individual who acts as a surety to the court for individuals who are unable to post bail for himself. In return for a non-refundable fee, the bondsman will post bail for the accused and be held liable by the court if the individual violates the conditions of his temporary release. The fee is usually 10% of the bail amount.
