Recent Arrests Made by BCSO Property Crimes Unit, Assisted by the Asheville Police Department and Buncombe County Anti-Crime Task Force

On November 8, 2017, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office Property Crimes Unit, assisted by the Asheville Police Department and Buncombe County Anti-Crime Task Force, executed search warrants at three residences in Asheville.
The search warrants were issued based upon information obtained as a result of several on-going residential breaking and entering and felony larceny investigations. Deputies recovered (5) stolen firearms, seized multiple other handguns, rifles and an illegal sawed-off shotgun, seized more than two pounds of marijuana, and seized $760.00 in cash.

As a result of evidence obtained during those search warrants and on-going investigations, the following subjects were arrested and charged:

The Partnership for Substance Free Youth Coalition in Buncombe County Partnering With Students of Martin L. Nesbitt Jr. Discovery Academy to Conduct Project Sticker Shock

The Partnership for Substance Free Youth Coalition in Buncombe County is partnering with students from Martin L. Nesbitt Discovery Academy and the HotSpot service station located at 1118 Brevard Road in Asheville to conduct Project Sticker Shock on Tuesday, November 21st at 3:00 pm. The youth will be placing stop sign stickers on alcoholic beverages as a reminder that it is illegal to buy or sell to minors.

Project Sticker Shock is when youth from communities partner with a local convenient store and get permission to put stickers on the alcohol beverages like alco-pops. Alco-pops are alcoholic beverages such as mikes hard lemonade that are fruity looking and are marketing towards youth. The sticker is placed to remind those buying and selling it to card and not to give to anyone under 21.

The Partnership for Substance Free Youth in Buncombe County is a coalition of community members and agencies that work towards preventing youth from using alcohol and prescription drugs. The coalition was formed in 2009.

Homicide Investigation Conducted At Brinwood Drive in Weaverville


A homicide investigation was initiated by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office on at November 11, 2017 at 26 Brinwood Drive in Weaverville. The initial call for service, referenced as a suspicious person, was made at 22:34. Deputies arrived at the residence at 22:42. Upon arrival deputies encountered the reporting party and a juvenile, white male. Deputies spoke to the juvenile, and then began a search for the victim to render aid, if possible. Additional law enforcement personnel were requested, and arrived at the complainant’s residence at 22:49. The victim was found shortly thereafter at the bottom of Brinwood Drive. Sheriff’s Office personnel continued to process the scene throughout the night, clearing the scene this morning at 10:32 am. This incident was domestic in nature, and there was never an ongoing threat to the surrounding community.

The victim in this incident was Kayla Desiree Hensley, 18, 26 Brinwood Drive in Weaverville. The juvenile suspect, Miss Hensley’s sibling, has been charged with first degree murder, and is in the custody of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Juvenile Justice. There is no further information to release at this time.

Scenes From This Year’s Smoky Mountain Toy Run

The Smoky Mountain Toy Run was held on Saturday, November 4th. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office own Donna Caraker accepted a thank you gift on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office at the event. The Smoky Mountain Toy Run is a police escorted motorcycle parade to collect toys and money for Eblen Charities Saint Nicholas Project who then distributes them to needy families in our area during the Christmas season. Started in 1981, the 2017 edition celebrates our 38th year of helping kids and families in need and is the oldest Toy Run in North Carolina and one of the oldest on the East Coast.
