Suffolk County Police officers were recently invited by the Boy Scouts to join their weekly meeting where they discussed making good decisions and talked about stranger danger. SCPD officers showed the Scouts all the tools they utilize on their belt, discussed the reasons for some of the tools, answered the Scouts’s questions and gave them turns to check out the inside of the patrol car.

“We are grateful our officers were invited to the meeting so the Scouts could learn about police work and safety," Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini said. " Our officers are always happy to meet with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts within Suffolk County. The children learn police officers are trained to help people just like the Scouts are, and some of our officers were once Boy and Girl Scouts themselves! We hope interaction with our officers will inspire some of the Scouts to become the next generation of Suffolk County police officers. "

Suffolk County Police third precinct police officers recently assisted members of the Lighthouse Mission to distribute more than 150 turkeys, nonperishable food items and beverages to more than 200 needy individuals and families in the Central Islip Area. In addition to providing the food in time for a healthy Thanksgiving meal, our officers frequently lend a hand at Lighthouse Mission's food pantry at the old railroad parking lot in Central Islip.

“Serving the community is a fundamental function of the department and the Suffolk County Police Department is grateful for the opportunity to help the Lighthouse Mission provide these Thanksgiving meals and to work with the organization to help the food-poor members of our communities.” Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini said. It’s a privilege to help the Lighthouse Mission help others.”

Police Officer John J. Venus joined the department on December 6, 1993. On November 7, 1994, while on patrol in the third precinct, Officer Venus was involved in a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Carleton Avenue and Suffolk Avenue in Central Islip.

On November 15, 1994, while at home recovering from his injuries, Officer Venus began to experience difficulty breathing. He was rushed to the hospital and admitted for treatment of a pulmonary embolism caused by the blunt force trauma he suffered in the motor vehicle accident. Police Officer Venus succumbed to his injuries on November 20, 1994. He was survived by his wife.

“Officer Venus made the ultimate sacrifice while on duty serving the community. This department will never forget his service and his sacrifice,” Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini said.

The Suffolk County Police Department is proud to congratulate one of our four-legged officers of the Canine Section!
Kaos recently completed 16 weeks of basic training, including criminal apprehension, evidence recovery, obedience and tracking to be completely certified.
Now, the 2-year-old German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix will start specialized training in human remains detection.
"Our canines are invaluable members of this department; they perform critically important, and often dangerous, police work to protect the residents of Suffolk County," Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini said. "We are proud to have K9 Kaos as part of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Canine Section."

Officers from the Community Relations Bureau and religious leaders from our communities recently came together for the Suffolk County Police Department Clergy-Police Council’s final meeting of 2017.

Officers and clergy members discussed the recent mass shooting at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and how the Suffolk County Police Department and religious leaders can help protect houses of worship through its SCPD Shield counterterrorism and anti-crime program. One training opportunity offered through SCPD Shield is our "Safety in the Sanctuary" program, which provides preparedness training in the event of an active shooter incident and safety evaluations for religious institutions.

The Clergy-Police Council was created in May of 2015 to allow the police department to work with faith-based organizations in our communities to help bridge the gap between the police and the public we serve. Since its inception, the Clergy-Police Council has met to discuss a variety of topics, including gangs, the heroin and opioid epidemic, language access and other issues impacting Suffolk County residents.

"The Suffolk County Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of our houses of worship and working with the Clergy-Police Council to protect our residents," Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini said. "I encourage all interested clergy members and religious leaders to join the Clergy-Police Council to provide the police department with insights into the needs of your community."

If you are a clergy member who is interested in joining the council for 2018, please call the Community Relations Bureau at .
