GENESEO: Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports that the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office K9 Kane is scheduled to receive body armor.

K9 Kane will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Kane’s vest is sponsored by an anonymous sponsor and will be embroidered with the sentiment “Only the best protection for man's best friend”. Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) charity located in East Taunton, MA whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. The non-profit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 2,700 protective vests, in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a cost of over 2.3 million dollars.

The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.

The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K9 is $950.00. Each vest has a value between $1,744 – $2,283 and a five-year warranty, and an average weight of 4-5 lbs. There is an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call . Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provides information, lists events, and accepts tax-deductible donations of any denomination at or mailed to P.O. Box 9 East Taunton, MA 02718.

“We are very pleased that a Livingston County resident donated money to Vested Interest to purchase a vest to protect Kane," stated Deputy Matthew Moran, K9 Kane’s handler. "Kane works hard every day and as his handler and best friend it is nice knowing he’ll have this added protection.”

INTERSTATE: Livingston County Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Rochester man for felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle charges after a traffic stop.

On November 18, 2017 Deputy Shawn Whitford was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office “Operation Safe Interstate” initiative and stopped a vehicle on Routes 5 and 20 at the exit 10 entrance ramps to the interstate for a vehicle and traffic law violation.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 52 year old James A. Wegman and the Deputy Sheriff suspected that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. It was also found that Wegman was operating the vehicle with a revoked NYS driver's license.

Wegman was taken into custody for Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the 1st Degree. During the course of the arrest, Wegman was also found to be in possession of an open container of alcohol as well as items of drug paraphernalia.

Wegman was transported to the Sheriff's Office Headquarters where Sergeant James Merrick, who is a Certified Drug Recognition Expert, conducted an evaluation. The Sergeant concluded that Wegman was under the influence of alcohol and could not operate a vehicle in a safe manner.

Wegman also submitted to a breath test which provided a BAC of .07%

Wegman was turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing and pre-arraignment detention.

Wegman was later arraigned in the Town of Geneseo Court before Justice Kathleen Houston. The Judge did remand Wegman to the custody of the Sheriff on $3,000 cash bail or $6,000 bond.
