Cheshire County is located in the southwestern portion of the state of New Hampshire. The county was established in 1769; Cheshire was one of the five original counties of New Hampshire and was named after the county of Cheshire in England. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 77,117 people and a total area of 729 square miles, of which 22 square miles is water and 707 square miles is land. Cheshire County borders the following counties: Sullivan County to the north; Hillsborough County to the east; Worcester County, Massachusetts, to the southeast; Franklin County, Massachusetts, to the southwest; and Windham County, Vermont, to the west.
The Cheshire County Register of Deeds is charged with the responsibility of maintaining public records in the county. Records maintained by the Register of Deeds include but are not limited to leases, easements, real estate, assignments, releases, plats and surveys, deeds, mortgages, federal and state tax liens, and condemnations. All documents recorded by the Register of Deeds have been microfilmed for security purposes, and the office is currently working on the process of scanning all documents for ease in locating information.
