Bail and Bondsman

Bail is the money given to the court to secure the release of an individual in jail who’s awaiting trial. The money is held by the court for the remainder of the trial to ensure that the defendant fulfills all of his court obligations. The money is refunded to him minus fees once the trial ends if he keeps his word. If he violates any of the conditions of his release, the money will be forfeited.

A defendant who does not have enough money to pay bail can use the services of a bondsman. The bondsman can post the bail on the defendant’s behalf for a non-refundable fee. This is typically 10% of the bail amount.
