Bail and Bondsman

A person charged with a crime is allowed to get temporarily released from jail once he has posted bail. Bail is the money lodged with the court which will be used to ensure the defendant’s compliance with the court’s requests while the trial is ongoing. The money is returned to the defendant after the trial, minus court fees, if he does not violate any of the conditions of his release. If he does, he forfeits the money.

If the defendant cannot afford bail, he can use 10% of the bail amount to pay the fee of a bondsman. When hired, a bondsman can act as a surety which means he can secure the release of a defendant from jail. It is important to note that this fee cannot be refunded.
