Cole County is located in the central portion of the state of Missouri. The county was formed on November 16, 1820, and named after Captain Stephen Cole, an Indian fighter and pioneer settler who built Cole’s Fort in Boonville. Jefferson City is the largest city in the county and the county seat, as well as the state capital. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 75,990 people and a total area of 402 square miles, of which 8.2 square miles is water and 394 square miles is land, making it the third-smallest county in Missouri by area. Cole County boarders the following counties: Boone County to the north, Callaway County to the northeast, Osage County to the southeast, Miller County to the southwest, and Moniteau County to the northwest.
