Anne Arundel County is located in the state of Maryland. The county was formed on April 9, 1650, and named after Lady Anne Arundell, a member of the ancient family of Arundells in Cornwall, United Kingdom, and the wife of Cecilius Calvert, second Baron and Lord Baltimore. Its county seat is Annapolis, which is also the capital of the state. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 537,656 people and a total area of 588 square miles, of which 173 square miles is water and 415 square miles is land.
