Sex Offender Search and Lookup:
Federal law dictates that all sex offenders must notify local law enforcement regarding changes in their information. These updates must then be registered in the national and state sex offender databases. The information within these databases are available to the public to help promote safety and awareness. Individuals who have been convicted of a sexually motivated crime such as rape, molestation, and child pornography are classified as sex offenders. To locate sex offenders living in Kentucky, you can visit the state’s sex offender registry here. However, it is important to note that the state cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information in the registry as some sex offenders fail to update their registration. This means that you may get information such as last known addresses of sex offenders.
Bail and Bondsman
The court can grant temporary release of a person charged with a criminal offense while awaiting trial if the individual can guarantee that he will attend all of his scheduled court appearances. This is called bail. There are different types of bail. Most will require a pledge of money as an additional guarantee. If the defendant misses one of his court dates, then the defendant loses the money he pledged to the court.
There will be times when a defendant is unable to post bail because of financial constraints. A bondsman can help defendants in this situation by acting as a surety. In the eyes of the court, the bondsman will be the one responsible for paying the defendant’s bail if he fails to show up in court as promised. In exchange for this service, the bondsman will charge a non-refundable fee which is usually set at 10% of the bail amount.
The state of Kentucky has banned the practice of commercial bail bonding. Ky. Stat. § 431.510 (outlawing commercial bail bond industry); see Stephens v. Bonding Assoc. of Kentucky, 538 S.W.2d 580 (Ky 1976) (upholding statute). If a bondsman from another state were to arrest a fugitive who had fled Kentucky, he will need to acquire a warrant first. Ky. Rev. Stat. § 440.270.
