The Sheriff's Office has joined many other police agencies across the state, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, in the Kansas Thanksgiving Safe Arrival traffic enforcement campaign. These enforcement efforts specifically aim at removing impaired drivers from our roads and ticketing vehicle occupants who are unrestrained or whose child passengers are unrestrained.

Please drive safely this holiday week: designate a sober driver, buckle up, and ensure your passengers are buckled up as well.

The cost of a DUI is steep - please celebrate Thanksgiving with your family and friends safely!

Congratulations to Deputy Tim Purdin who was awarded the 2017 Bronze Award of Valor at the 45th Annual Awards for Valor Luncheon on Friday, November 17th! He received the award for peacefully resolving an armed suicidal subject call earlier this year. Great Job Deputy Purdin!

In honor of Veterans Day this month, we want to shine our employee spotlight on Lt. Dan Diercks, a watch commander in our Patrol Division and highly decorated Major in the Air Force.

Lt. Diercks is a former commander of the 442nd Security Forces Squadron, Whiteman AFB, Missouri. As commander, he was responsible for training a combat ready Security Forces Squadron, fully equipped and capable of deploying worldwide in support of Air Force Operations. His wartime responsibilities included Resource Protection, Systems Security, and Air Base Ground Defense. In peacetime, he was responsible for training all wing personnel in Combat Arms qualification.

Between his enlistement in 1986 and retirement in 2013, Lt. Diercks went through 3 different deployments (Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Iraqi Freedom), recieved 21 major awards and decorations, and multiple other achievements.

Lt. Diercks service to country and community didn't stop there, however. For several years, he volunteered his time with the New Century Young Marines as the Operations officer and Commanding Officer and helped formed the Shawnee Young Marines where he served as the Commanding Officer. The Young Marines is an organization which is primarily focused on DARE, by instilling values such as self-respect, self-confidence, and self-discipline, as well as fostering patriotism and the concept of community involvement.

He also assists the Heart of America Stand Down event with his former unit, the 442nd Fighter Wing. Heart of America Stand Down is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which works year round to provide assistance to the homeless veterans of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. They seek donations in various forms throughout the year, culminating in an event each fall and spring. At these events, the homeless veteran is given a secure environment to gain a brief respite from living on the streets. Volunteers assist in providing hot meals, medical and dental care, legal and VA assistance, clothing, and a host of other items. Many times on the event day, volunteers merely escort veterans around to the various stations or simply sit down and talk with them over a coffee or soda.

We are so grateful to have Lt. Diercks at our agency and he serves as an excellent example of the saying "Duty. Honor. Service." Thank you, Lt. Diercks, for your unwavering service to our great nation and the citizens of Johnson County!
