The Sheriff, the chief principal law enforcement officer of the County, is the only full-time elected County law enforcement official provided for by the Illinois Constitution. The Office of the Sheriff goes back in history to old-world Europeand was brought by early settlers to this country where it has evolved into an all encompassing law enforcement agency. The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for numerous and diverse services. The Sheriff’s Office works closely with and provides assistance to the social service agencies in the County: Riverview Center, DCFS and Jane Addams. Along with providing law enforcement service, the Sheriff maintains the Jo Daviess County Jail, which is located within the Public Safety Building and has a total capacity of 27 inmates. Also located within the Public Safety Building is the Emergency Enhanced 9-1-1 Communications Center. The Sheriff is responsible for all communication and dispatching of all fire, medical, and law enforcement services throughout the County. Along with general law enforcement, criminal investigations, public safety services, maintaining the County jail, and Emergency 911, the Sheriff also provides other services including, but not limited to, water patrol and rescue, mounted and radio patrols (auxiliary patrols), a search and rescue canine unit, a narcotic detection and criminal apprehension canine unit, vehicle investigations, emergency services and disaster agency services, and Hazardous Materials Response Unit. The Sheriff also maintains dockets, registers, jail records, fingerprints, and arrest files. Writs and warrants are executed, and summons and subpoenas are served. The Sheriff’s deputies also attend all courts on record, and accept and receipt bail in accordance with the rules of the Circuit Court.

Jo Daviess Sheriff’s Office K9’s Crow & Basco have received body armor.
Jo Daviess Sheriff’s Office K9’s Crow & Basco have received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of K9 Ty, California City Police Department.”
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c(3) charity located in East Taunton, MA whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. The non-profit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 2,600 protective vests in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a cost of over 2.1 million dollars.
The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.
The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K9 is $950.00. Each vest has a value between $1,744 – $2,283, and a five-year warranty and an average weight of 4-5 lbs. There is an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call . Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provides information, lists events, and accepts tax-deductible donations of any denomination at or mailed to P.O. Box 9 East Taunton, MA 02718.

On November 24, 2014, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office purchased a 1.5 year old Belgian Malinois later named Basco. Basco was imported from the Czech Republic to Vohn Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana. Basco would then be partnered with Deputy Klaus Kretschmer, a five year Deputy assigned to K-9 patrol. In May of 2014, Deputy Kretschmer and K-9 Basco completed the ten week Illinois State Police Canine Academy in Springfield, IL. Basco is certified in narcotic detection (cannabis, heroin, meth, cocaine, and Ecstasy), tracking, building/area searches, apprehension, and article searches. Sgt. Kretschmer and Basco are currently assigned to the Northwest Critical Incident Response Team (C.I.R.T.). On their off time, Basco loves playing fetch with our three year old daughter.

Deputy Joe Duerr and K-9 Crow completed their original K-9 training and certification course in 2014 with the Illinois State Police. K-9 Crow was born in Sweden and imported for the purpose of being trained as a full purpose K-9. K-9 Crow is a very high energy K-9 who enjoys his job which is primarily narcotics searches. K-9 Crow is also used for article searches, tracking, and apprehension. When K-9 Crow is not working, he likes to burn off energy by playing fetch.
Both Deputy Joe Duerr and Sgt. Klaus Kretschmer are grateful for this charitable donation from Vested Interest in K-9’s Inc. With these bullet/stab resistant vests both K-9’s Crow and Basco will have the highest level of protection while helping to serve and protect the citizens of Jo Daviess County.
