*** D.A.R.E. Graduation ***

Sheriff Kevin Callahan is happy to announce that students at Gardner and South Wilmington Grade Schools celebrated their D.A.R.E. graduations on November 14 and 15 culminating a 10-week long program that the fifth-graders successfully completed in the course of the semester. The course has been taught in Grundy County schools for more than 25 years.

Children in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms throughout the country today face a multitude of high risk circumstances including the temptation to use drugs and alcohol, violence, bullying, and internet safety, not to mention the fear of school violence.

The D.A.R.E. program teaches students decision making skills that equip them to lead safe and healthy lives. Lessons include the dangers of drug abuse, how to resist and refuse peer pressure, and how to take a stand against bullying. The D.A.R.E. program is designed to boost students’ social skills, enhance self-esteem, and provide tools to help them make responsible decisions.

As a graduation requirement, the fifth graders are asked to write an essay describing what they have learned from the D.A.R.E. program. The essays are often narratives of personal experiences of bullying or peer pressure and explain how the students will use or have used the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model to overcome those challenges. State Representative David A. Welter and Grundy County Coroner John Callahan at the graduation encouraged the students to continue to use the skills they learned in D.A.R.E.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan said, “Congratulations to the D.A.R.E. graduates at South Wilmington and Gardner Grade Schools, I am proud to continue to teach the D.A.R.E. program to first, third, and fifth grade students at Braceville, South Wilmington, Gardner, Mazon, and Nettle Creek School Districts.”

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office teaches the program to more than 350 students in 5 schools during the course of the school year. Funding for the D.A.R.E. program is provided in part through community and private donations.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan announces “Below 100” training initiative.

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office is proud to participate and support the national Below 100 Training Program. Sheriff’s Deputies recently completed their annual “Below 100” training.

The Below 100 initiative was designed to remind police officers of five basic principles:
• Wear your seat belt
• Watch your speed
• Wear your vest
• W.I.N. (What’s Important Now)
• Remember: Complacency Kills!

The training program was formed in an effort to permanently eliminate preventable law enforcement line of duty deaths and injuries through innovative training and awareness. This challenge recognizes each officer’s death as a tragedy. By working together—and only by working together—we can keep our streets and ourselves safer. The choices we make impact the outcome of every event. In the United States, we’ve averaged about 150 officers killed per year in the last ten years. Together, the goal is to bring that number to below 100. With this in mind, the Sheriff’s Office works hard to never falter in our ongoing efforts to increase officer safety.
