Russell County is a county in the state of Alabama, It was established on December 18, 1832, by an act of the state general assembly, from lands ceded to the state by the Creek Indians. It was named after Colonel Gilbert C. Russell, who fought in the wars against the Creek Indians. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 52,947 and a total area of 647 square miles. The county has had a number of county seats: Girard (1833–1839), Crawford (1839–1868), Seale (1868–1935) and Phenix City (1935–present). Russell County borders the following counties: Lee County to the north; Muscogee County, Georgia to the northeast; Chattahoochee County, Georgia to the east; Stewart County, Georgia to the southeast;, Barbour County to the south; Bullock County to the southwest; and Macon County to the northwest.
